Tencent ordered 250,000 mid-autumn mooncakes this year, and the box was actually made of sugarcane bagasse

Last year's Tencent Mid-Autumn Mooncake box with Great Wall Brick design received a lot of attention from netizens, and this year it's even plainer, actually made from bagasse.

Of course it's not the bagasse you finish chewing, but from a mass-produced factory. Sugarcane, a common raw material for sugar factories, will leave a lot of bagasse after the sugar factory has finished squeezing sugar. This bagasse is chopped up and blended into a powder. Then water is added and mixed with other pulp ingredients to make a pulp.

The paper pulp is poured into a custom mold and becomes the box. Cut a raw edge and the mooncake box is ready. Poke another logo, and it's a Tencent mooncake box.

The entire process uses all-natural materials (bagasse), no ink, no plastic, and the process produces no wastewater. What's even better is that the cut-off burlap will also be turned into supermarket egg trays.

When the mooncake is finished, the box can be used to grow some greenery and hold children's toys. If thrown away, it will degrade in 6 months in the soil. This is this year's Tencent mooncake box, plain, but environmentally friendly and recyclable.

Tencent says they ordered about 250,000 mid-autumn mooncakes this year. Replacing traditional boxes with bagasse saves 757 trees, equivalent to a small forest.
